More churches and Russian hockey fans

Thursday, we travelled to Yaroslavl. This is a fairly big city which seems quite vibrant. We met up with a local guide who took us on a hop-on hop-off bus tour of the city. It probably should have been a walking tour, because you would hop-on, go a few blocks, then hop-off... but in any case.

The city was quite beautiful. We visited the monestary where we got another carillon concert by the bells player. Then we went to the site of the old Kremlin, which has been destroyed in the 2nd world war, and never rebuilt. The following is a monument to the soldiers and people of the town who fought and defended the town from the Nazis during the 2nd world war.

Yaroslavl also has a beautiful waterfront along the river going through town. It is very well built up and well kept. The town just celebrated it's 1000th anniversary of it's foundation 3 years ago, so you can tell a lot of embellishments were made for that occasion. Of course, more churches and cathedrals were on the agenda.

After lunch, we had some free time. We in fact had until around 11:00PM that night, when we would board our overnight train to St-Petersberg. We went back to the monestary, because there was a bell tower that we could climb and see the view of the city.

The we went back to the waterfront park. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and on the boardwalk they had water fountains that were dancing to piped in music. So, we relaxed here for a while.

Then we went and met up with our group again. You may recall that this is where I found internet access outside the post office, so we sat on the sidewalk and posted an update a few days ago.

Wandered around a bit more, went through the market area, stopped for a beer, found a little bar for a light dinner, and spotted the following evidence that hockey is popular around here too. These jerseys were on the seats of a car parked outside the restaurant, and are for the Yaroslavl Torpedoes of the Rus-2 hockey league. I know the letters don't look like Torpedoes, but trust me... a P is and R, a C is and S... we were able to figure out that this says Torpedo. Just like we eventually figured out that "Pectopah" is "Restaurant". Too bad I didn't have my Sens jersey with me at this moment, because this would have made a good shot, with me standing beside this car with my Sens jersey. Oh well, I wasn't prepared.

By the way, when I was in Moscow, we were chatting with one of our waiters, and I asked him if he knew Anton Volchenkov, since he is from Moscow and all. He said: "Yes, of course." ... That's it. That was the end of the conversation, but it was just kind of interesting to see that they know their players who made it to the NHL.

After this, we headed towards the train station to board our overnight train to St-Petersberg. Was not looking forward to this overnight, 13 hour train ride, but it helped that St-Petersberg was our destination. I expected that city to be the highlight of this trip, and I was not disappointed. More on that later.

Take care;

Marc.
